[Hesitates at first but eventually starts to follow, the tiger heeling alongside him.]

You're being stupid. You can't do anything for anyone. Why do you even want to? They wouldn't do it for you.

That's what's called making the best of a bad situation.

[Grunts.]

Excuse me for not playing the part of the self-righteous martyr.

Don't worry, with as reckless as you are I'm sure you'll get it right eventually.

If I get there a little sooner so that a lot of people can get there a little later, I'll count it a fair trade.

[in a tone that very clearly states "you are dumb and I am tired of arguing with you":]

[Follows along sullenly. The world becomes darker and more barren as they go; even as they reach where the buildings are not burnt, any festivities are over. People hide in their homes, turning off the lights as the strangers approach.]

[Hmm. But where did the people on the move end up?]

[court_chesster]

[Hiding, maybe? Or they've moved on ahead. At any rate, clouds are gathering.]

...Great.

[whenitrainsitstorms]

...storms. Just what we need.

We'd better find someplace to take shelter.

[And that lights-out reception doesn't give me much hope for the hospitality of the locals.]

[court_chesster]

Nobody's going to let us in...

[eyes flitting around]

...Look for an apartment building with a lot of floors. We can hide in the stairwell.

[whenitrainsitstorms]

If it's not locked.

[Scanning for a larger building, though - and trying the door when he spots it. Sure enough, locked.]

[That storm is coming on fast, too. Forget gathering clouds. The sky to the east has gone black as ink, and the approaching rain looks like a solid sheet.

[court_chesster]

Maybe we can break in?

[Digs through his pockets looking for a lockpick or something like it. He finds a gun.]

Hmm...

[whenitrainsitstorms]

[Glances it over; there's zero recognition for what that thing is, but he nods at the suggestion. The storm is sweeping toward them, flashes of lightning visible in the clouds, the strength of the wind bending and snapping trees like they were twigs.]

Step back.

[And he's going to try and brute force it. Just slamming into it with his shoulder, here.]

[Opens his mouth and then closes it. This is not what he was about to suggest, but if this guy wants to bang himself up knocking in a door, why would he protest?]
